Modding a tiny little quest

Newbie question: So, just for some fun, I'm starting a small FedEx quest mod in BG:EE. I can make a weapon or even an NPC in Near Infinity, but this is beyond me. In particular, I'm having trouble handing off the quest item to the appropriate character. How do I do this? With a script? With dialogue? Thanks....
